Organ Meat Jerky and Why You Should Feed It to Your Pup

We are always looking for ways to help our fur babies live happy, healthy, long lives. One of those ways just happens to come in the form of a tasty treat - Grass Fed Beef Bodacious Organ Meat Jerky!

Grass fed beef organ meats are some of the most nutrient dense and vitamin rich foods you can give your pup. They are filled with important vitamins, minerals, micro-nutrients and amino acids in dense packages of tastiness.

Three of the most nutritious organs are the liver, kidney and heart.

I know what your thinking….aren’t the liver and kidneys the place where all those toxins in our bodies go? Yes, that is in fact what the liver and kidneys do, filter the toxins out of our bodies, however those toxins are not stored in the organs themselves, rather they are expelled in our waste products.

The great thing about beef liver and kidney is pups go absolutely bonkers over the taste! Liver and kidney are filled with vitamins, minerals, micro-nutrients and essential amino acids. Here’s the nutritional breakdown:

Vitamin A: aids digestion, is a powerful antioxidant, keeps the reproductive organs healthy, is great for eye health and helps reduce inflammation-causing diseases

Vitamin D: regulates balance and works to retain calcium and phosphorus for strong/healthy bones

Vitamin E: essential for cellular function and fat metabolism as well as being a powerful antioxidant (get outta here free radicals!!)

Vitamin K: activates the blood’s ability to clot

FOLATE and Vitamin B12: these are central to the health of the nervous system and they aid in production of red blood cells

COPPER and IRON: these important trace minerals are vital for oxygen transport in the bloodstream.

As for our friend the HEART this blood rich organ is also a canine favorite treat! Beef heart is a complete source of protein meaning it contains all 9 essential amino acids. Why is this important you ask? Let’s go back to high school biology shall we. So amino acids are molecules that combine to form proteins, which are the building blocks of life. The 9 essential amino acids are not biosynthesized by mammals (high school biology, dogs are mammals) so they must be obtained from food. All 9 essential amino acids perform important roles in the body. They’re involved in many processes, including tissue growth, energy production, immune function, and nutrient absorption. Essentially, without these essential amino acids you’re pooch would be in a bad way!

In addition to providing these essential amino acids, beef heart is also a great source of:

IRON, ZINC, SELENIUM, PHOSPHOROUS: these are essential for oxygen transport in the blood, reduction of oxidative stress (antioxidant), healthy bone structure and the provision of cell energy

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10): this enzyme is important for energy balance, prevention of oxidative stress (an antioxidant) and can help treat and prevent certain diseases like heart disease. We love this enzyme!!

B-COMPLEX Vitamins (B1, B2, B6, B12): these have a cardio-protective effect (protect against heart disease)

FOLATE: health of the nervous system and production of red blood cells

TAURINE: this amino acid is critical to a healthy heart-a deficiency can lead to heart disease

PROTEIN: heart is an incredibly rich source of lean protein.

We have a special place in our hearts for heart. When our lil’ man Kahlua was diagnosed with heart disease we started researching how we could help increase his heart health through diet. To be honest, the thought of feeding raw organ meat, or cooking it which removes many of its nutrients, was not something I was really excited about. One thing my Kahlua loves is jerky. So I thought, what about turning these nutrient dense packages of tastiness into even tastier and more appealing (for me at least) nuggets. And the Bodacious Organ Meat Jerky was born!

Where does our grass fed beef organ meat come from you ask? We source from a Utah family owned and operated ranch where all cows are born and raised munching on pasture and open range. The ranch follows bio-sustainable practices where they are committed to improving land resources, providing essential habitat for wildlife and performing rotational grazing. The cattle are never given antibiotics, growth hormones, animal by-products or grain, just lush pasture for life.

Our jerky contains no additives, preservatives, or colors, its just dehydrated organ meat - now this is a product you can really feel good about feeding to your pup!
